El Paso native Drew Gonzalez selected 189th overall by New York Yankees
The 2026 Major League Baseball Draft concluded its second day on Sunday, July 12, when the New York Yankees chose high school standout Drew Gonzalez with the 189th overall pick in the sixth round.
Gonzalez, a recent graduate of Americas High School, capped his senior season as the El Paso Times' All‑City MVP, finishing with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs while helping the Trailblazers reach the Class 5A, Division 1 regional finals.
Standing 6‑foot‑1 and weighing 197 pounds, the shortstop‑third baseman drew private workouts from a handful of clubs, including the Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles, before the draft.
College or professional?
If the Yankees do not reach an agreement, Gonzalez has already committed to Texas Tech University, where he could join the Red Raiders and continue his development in the NCAA.
The draft selection has sparked optimism among local fans and underscores the growing talent pipeline emerging from El Paso’s high school programs.
