El Paso Native to Be Honored at NASCAR Coca‑Cola 600

First Sergeant Glenn L. Harris' legacy will be celebrated as the race kicks off on May 24

As the engines roar toward the green flag for the Coca‑Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a solemn tribute will accompany the spectacle. On Sunday, May 24, at 5 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, the race will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video and HBO Max, with radio coverage on SiriusXM and PRN. Among the 40 drivers, one car will carry a very special emblem.

Military Roots and Sacrifice

First Sergeant Glenn L. Harris, an El Paso native who spent 16 years in the United States Army, will be remembered as part of the 600 Miles of Remembrance program. Harris concluded his service as the First Sergeant of Bravo Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, a unit renowned for its elite operations.

His bravery was first tested in the chaotic streets of Mogadishu during Operation Gothic Serpent, where he earned both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his actions under fire. The following year, while still on active duty, Harris died in a tragic airborne training accident at Fort Benning, Georgia, on December 4, 1994.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy, and their daughters Tara and Heather, who will watch the tribute from afar. The Legacy Motor Club will honor Harris on the No. 42 Toyota Camry XSE driven by John Hunter Nemechek, whose paint scheme will bear Harris’s name as a permanent reminder of his sacrifice.

The ceremony underscores how sports can serve as a conduit for collective memory, linking the high‑speed world of NASCAR with the enduring values of duty and remembrance that Harris embodied.
