A Heart-Felt Game
Derek Stickelman, an 11-year-old right-hander, was born with a congenital heart defect that required two open-heart surgeries and a pacemaker by the time he was six months old. At age one he underwent eye surgery to correct strabismus, leaving him with a maximum visual acuity of 20/80. Despite these medical hurdles, Derek’s love for baseball has never wavered.
Playoff Passion
He now competes in the Arapahoe Youth League playoffs for the Littleton Thunder, a team based in Colorado’s Front Range. Coach Justin Hackett has praised Derek’s smooth swing and upbeat body language, noting that his presence lifts the entire squad.
Inspiration On and Off the Field
Teammates such as Logan Hackett watch in awe as Derek steps up to the plate, his enthusiasm contagious. “He never lets anything hold him back,” Logan said, adding that Derek’s positive attitude fuels their own drive to win.
Family and Community Backing
Derek’s parents, Torrey and Allyson Stickelman, have been his steadfast supporters, cheering from the stands and celebrating each milestone. Their pride reflects a broader community that rallies around the young athlete’s remarkable journey.
Looking Ahead
As the playoffs progress, Derek continues to practice relentlessly, his obsession with the game evident in every drill. While his vision remains a challenge, advances in adaptive equipment and the unwavering support of his family and coaches promise a bright future for this budding star.
The Arapahoe Youth League hopes Derek’s story will inspire similar programs across the state, proving that determination can eclipse any physical limitation.
