Eligibility Rulings Shape Upcoming Seasons
The Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League board of directors released a series of eligibility determinations that will affect dozens of high school athletes as they prepare for the 2026‑27 campaign across football, basketball and wrestling.
Jackson Mickens, a recent transfer from Geibel Catholic to Uniontown, was granted clearance to compete after a standout season that earned him Class 3A Interstate Conference All‑Purpose Player of the Year honors, amassed 442 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, added six receptions for 80 yards and contributed 11 total touchdowns, while also recording 47 tackles, 17.5 for loss, and a team‑high nine sacks on defense.
Zion Smith, who moved from Serra Catholic to Pine‑Richland, was denied eligibility, while other transfers such as Nicholas Black, Giovanni Guerriere, Dionte Henry Jr., Evangeline Offi, Julius Page, Chase Porter, Nasir Roccman, Michael Smith and Ryder Shulin received approval to join their new schools for the upcoming season.
The board also cleared additional athletes including Ryder Shulin, Ryder Carr, Jance Henry, Jordyn Kelly, Robert Mrozek, Jaivin Peel, Amaizen Straughters, Kylen Taylor, Levi Wynn and Carter Grinnen, though some of these rulings granted only regular‑season eligibility with postseason ineligibility.
A co‑op agreement between Wilmington and Laurel was approved to sponsor girls wrestling, expanding opportunities for female athletes in the region.
The rulings reflect the board’s effort to balance competitive fairness with the growing number of student‑athlete transfers, and they will shape roster decisions for dozens of teams as the new school year begins.
