The Elite Hockey League, known as the Motorpoint Elite League, staged a two‑day pre‑season camp in Nottingham this week, gathering roughly 40 officials and 15 trainees to ready them for the upcoming campaign.
Liam Sewell, the league’s Head of Hockey Operations, teamed up with Scott Zelkin, the International Ice Hockey Federation’s Head of Officiating, to guide the sessions, alongside a cadre of officiating coaches.
Safety and Leadership Take Center Stage
The program blended classroom workshops on Video Review, Standards, Concussion Awareness and Leadership & Accountability with on‑ice drills, ensuring participants could apply theory in real‑time scenarios.
By consolidating these elements into a focused camp, the league aimed to offset the absence of regular in‑season meetings and to give each official a solid foundation before the first puck drops.
The initiative underscores a broader commitment to safety and mentorship, as the league seeks to nurture both seasoned referees and the next generation of talent throughout the season.
