Ellington High School’s football program is entering its third year under head coach Brady Johnson, who has already compiled a 13‑9 record and guided the team to a 7‑4 playoff run.
The Knights will return 17 starters from last season, a depth that includes all but two defensive starters and eight offensive contributors, giving the squad a rare continuity heading into the new campaign.
Senior running back Brett Powell headlines the returning talent, having topped the rushing charts with 781 yards in 2025, while the offense will be led by newcomer Kolton Ortyl, who steps in as the starting quarterback after Aaron Ladr’s departure.
Defensively, the unit retains most of its key pieces, but the team will miss the graduation of two defensive starters and one offensive starter, creating both opportunities and questions for the coaching staff.
Playoff aspirations
After a tough loss to Killingly in the Class SS quarterfinals, the Knights are focused on breaking past the first round and adding another chapter to their playoff narrative.
The season opens on September 11 with a marquee matchup against Granby/Canton at 6:30 p.m., a game that will set the tone for a schedule packed with rivals such as Griswold, Stafford/East Windsor/Somers, and Coginchaug.
