Elliott Avent, the longtime head coach of the NC State Wolfpack baseball program, announced that he will step down at the conclusion of the current season, ending a 30‑year tenure that reshaped the program and placed it among the nation’s elite.
During his three decades at the helm, Avent guided the Wolfpack to more than 1,100 victories, captured three appearances at the College World Series, and led the team to 22 NCAA regionals, six super regionals, and CWS trips in 2013, 2021, and 2024.
A career defined by excellence
Avent finished his NC State career with 1,103 wins, while his overall Division I record stands at 1,327 victories. His teams earned ACC and National Coach of the Year honors in 2003 and he was named USA Baseball’s College Coach of the Year in 2021.
In recognition of his contributions, Governor Josh Stein presented Avent with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award, one of the state’s highest civilian honors, celebrating his impact on North Carolina’s sports landscape.
The university also paid tribute by naming the new baseball clubhouse at Doak Field the Elliott Avent Clubhouse, ensuring that his legacy will be visible to every future player who steps onto the field.
Looking ahead
In a heartfelt farewell statement, Avent thanked his coaching staff, support personnel, players, and fans for their dedication over the years. He expressed confidence that the program will continue to thrive under new leadership while acknowledging the deep connections forged during his time in Raleigh.
The next chapter for Avent remains open, but his imprint on NC State baseball is indelible, having produced 31 professional players — including four who now compete in Major League Baseball — and setting a standard for excellence that will guide the program for years to come.
