A late equaliser caps a dominant second half
Elon University’s soccer side earned a valuable point in the Colonial Athletic Association on Saturday, playing to a 1‑1 draw with William & Mary at Rudd Field. The match marked the Phoenix’s first appearance in CAA competition this season and set the stage for a campaign that could reshape their conference standing.
The Tribe drew first blood, heading into the break with a solitary goal that left the Phoenix trailing at the half‑time whistle. William & Mary’s early lead was built on disciplined defending and a few early chances, but the Phoenix kept the pressure on.
After the interval Elon turned up the intensity, generating 11 of the 19 total shots and carving out a series of chances that tested the Tribe’s defense. The second‑half surge featured relentless wing play, precise passing and a series of long‑range attempts that forced the opposition into a defensive scramble.
The deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when Magnus Jacobsen met a cross from Weston Jonke, slotting the ball past the keeper to level the scores. It was Jacobsen’s second goal of the campaign and his first since the previous season’s CAA semifinal, sparking a wave of celebration among the home crowd.
Goalkeeper Drew Hartman was busy, making two saves including a crucial stop in the 84th minute that denied Alex Garrison a winner. His performance preserved the parity and kept the Phoenix’s momentum alive as the game entered its final minutes.
Elon’s 19‑9 edge in shots underscored the pressure they applied, while Hartman’s saves kept the visitors at bay. The draw marks the Phoenix’s first point in CAA play and improves their record to 1‑1‑1 overall, a promising start for a team that has been building toward conference contention.
The result extends an unbeaten run against William & Mary to seven meetings, a streak that now stands at 4‑0‑3, and sets the tone for a season in which Elon hopes to climb the conference ladder. With key contributors such as Joe Taylor, Dominik Renz, Kosei Sasaki, Diego Thompson and Jordin Wilson all seeing action, the Phoenix look poised to add more points in upcoming fixtures.
