Eltonino Hicks, a three‑star defensive back from St. James, Virginia, revealed his commitment to the University of Connecticut on Friday night, marking a significant addition to the Huskies’ emerging 2027 recruiting class.
The announcement came after a whirlwind recruitment that saw Hicks field interest from eighteen programs across the nation, including traditional powers such as Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Syracuse, Colorado State, West Virginia and Toledo.
Hicks said the decisive factor was a personal connection with UConn’s linebackers coach Mickey Jacobs, who extended the scholarship offer on March 10, 2026, and has since been a constant presence in the recruit’s dialogue.
Ranked No. 1,101 overall in the national composite, No. 113 among safeties and No. 15 within Virginia, Hicks brings a 6‑foot‑2, 200‑pound frame that coaches describe as both versatile and physically imposing.
Prior to his senior season at St. James Performance Academy, Hicks transferred from Rock Creek Christian Academy, where he first garnered attention for his hard‑hitting style of play.
He is slated to take an official visit to Storrs on June 5, an itinerary that will give him a deeper look at the campus environment and the program’s recent strides.
A Strategic Addition to the Defensive Backfield
The Huskies’ defensive scheme, which emphasizes aggressive press coverage and flexible safety rotations, appears to be a perfect fit for Hicks’ skill set.
Coaches believe his ability to read quarterbacks and deliver hard hits will shore up a secondary that has shown incremental improvement over the past two seasons.
Recruiting analysts note that Hicks’ commitment not only fills a positional need but also signals UConn’s growing appeal to top talent in the Mid‑Atlantic region.
With the new class taking shape, the coaching staff is poised to leverage this momentum as they chase additional targets before the next signing period.
