Ely Baseball Dominates Conference Play

The Ely Eagles baseball team captured both the Iron Range and Arrowhead Conference championships, finishing the season with a 15‑win record and earning a place in the Section 7A Final Four for the fifth consecutive year.

Their success was highlighted by a sweep of league opponents, a feat that underscores the program’s consistency and depth.

All‑Conference Honors

Hunter Halbakken, Drew Johnson, Owen Marolt, Tyde Brecke and Evan Leeson were each recognized by the conferences, with Halbakken earning dual honors after a stellar pitching performance and a solid bat.

Halbakken finished the year at 8‑1 on the mound with a 1.32 ERA, striking out 59 batters in 53 innings while batting .288 with 11 RBIs. Johnson posted a .349 average, scored 24 runs and drove in 19, and stole a team‑high 17 bases. Marolt led the offense with a .449 average, 28 runs and 20 RBIs, adding nine extra‑base hits. Brecke hit .377, scored 21 times and contributed 16 RBIs, and also reached base at a .489 clip. Leeson batted .277 and added 24 runs and 13 RBIs.

The collective production helped the Eagles outpace league rivals and cement their reputation as a perennial contender.

Coach Mike McCormick praised the team’s work ethic and highlighted the blend of pitching dominance and offensive firepower that defined the season.
