A Season of Resurgence
The 2026 All-Piney Woods baseball season delivered a narrative of renewal, as three fresh head coaches injected new energy into their programs. Among them, Blake Wolfe of Elysian Fields guided his Yellowjackets back into the postseason after a one-year absence, while the teams from Hallsville and Harleton extended their playoff streaks, underscoring the depth of talent across the region.
Marshall posted an 11-16-2 overall record and a 6-11 mark in District 10-5A, while Waskom, under Joshua Johnson, logged an 8-16-1 season – the best district performance for the program since 2013. Jefferson, coached by Joshua Cuellar, enjoyed its most successful campaign yet, though it fell just short of a playoff berth. Hallsville overcame an 0-2 start to finish 17-6 and earn a Class 5A Division I bi-district slot, and Harleton closed the year third in District 19-2A with a 26-10 record that carried them to the regional semifinals.
Standout Performances
Individual honors reflected the season’s competitive balance. John Beavers of Elysian Fields earned Most Valuable Player after delivering a .408 batting average, 36 runs, 30 RBIs and a 1.000 fielding percentage while also pitching six shutout innings with 14 strikeouts. Freshman Hunter Umling began to carve his reputation as a future leader for the Jackets, while Kayden Skaggs of Harleton captured Offensive Player of the Year with a .424 average and 44 RBIs. Deuce Heard of Marshall was recognized for Defensive Player of the Year after a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage, and Cade Stuckey of Hallsville took Pitcher of the Year honors with a 9-3 record and a 2.30 ERA.
Coach Blake Wolfe and the Elysian Fields Yellowjackets were named Coach/Team of the Year, a tribute that also celebrated their victory in the Kip Lewis Memorial Tournament. The achievement resonated as a poignant link to the late Kip Lewis, whose legacy continues to inspire the community.
