A Defensive Masterclass in Prescott
Embry-Riddle University’s Eagles opened their 2026 campaign with a 0–0 stalemate against Warner Pacific, a result that underscored the team’s newly forged defensive identity and set the tone for a season built around resilience.
Goalkeeper Sam Macdonald was the backbone of the clean sheet, making five crucial saves, including a fingertip stop on Luis Gonzalez’s header and a reflex denial of Jose Robles’s low strike that kept the visitors at bay.
The backline, anchored by Francesco Busini, Aleksandar Mihajlovic, Dario Ajdini and Zach Campbell, logged the full 90 minutes, repelling a barrage of 17 shots and maintaining shape under constant pressure.
Midfielders Hugo Gil and Nitai Bental drove the attack, combining for 11 attempts, three of which tested the opposition keeper. Gil’s early high shot and a wayward effort in the 19th minute highlighted the team’s willingness to press forward, while Bental’s pressure forced a save from Owen Purvis at the 22‑minute mark.
Rodrigo Garcia crafted a key chance in the 76th minute, only to see his effort saved by Purvis, illustrating the fine margins that defined the match. The squad also featured contributions from Rojvan Karaer and Kevin Yamna, who added depth to the midfield and defensive rotations.
Though the Eagles fell short of a winning goal, their disciplined defending and the heroics of Macdonald kept the score level. The side will now turn its attention to a home clash with Westcliff scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. in Prescott, Arizona.
