A New Chapter for the Cyclones
Emily Ryan, the standout point guard who anchored Iowa State’s midfield for five seasons, has transitioned into a full‑time assistant coach role, the university announced Tuesday.
Ryan’s tenure as a Cyclone was marked by historic performances. She became only the third woman in NCAA history to amass at least 1,500 points, 900 assists and 600 rebounds, a testament to her all‑court versatility.
Her career culminated with 993 assists, a school record that also places her seventh all‑time among Division I players. She also finished among the top five in program history for steals and blocks, underscoring her defensive impact.
Coach Bill Fennelly praised Ryan’s leadership, noting that her deep understanding of the game and commitment to the program will enrich the coaching staff.
Ryan earned All‑Big 12 first‑team honors in 2022 and was selected to the second team in 2023, while also being named to the league’s all‑defensive squad in 2021.
Legacy Meets Leadership
Beyond statistics, Ryan’s influence extended to the community and the locker room, where she was regarded as a mentor and a model of professionalism.
Her promotion reflects Iowa State’s strategy to blend fresh talent with seasoned insight as the program looks ahead to the next competitive cycle.
The university also highlighted the continuity of its basketball philosophy, with Ryan poised to help shape the next generation of Cyclones.
