Wewahitchka High School announced this week that Emory Horne will assume the role of head football coach, stepping into the position just seven days before the start of fall practice.
Horne, a 1992 graduate of Wewahitchka, spent 17 years as the head baseball coach at Blountstown High before transitioning to football, where he built a reputation as a dedicated assistant over 21 seasons with the Tigers.
A Coach With Deep Local Roots
His move follows the exit of Adam Edwards, who left the program for a position at Sneads, creating the vacancy that the school board has now filled.
Horne says his immediate priority is to recruit athletes for all levels of the program, from middle school to varsity, ensuring the team is competitive as it enters a new competitive structure.
A New Competitive Landscape
The upcoming season will place Wewahitchka in the state's newly formed 57‑team Independent Class, a small‑school division that promises fresh matchups and heightened stakes.
Fall practice is scheduled to begin on July 27, a date that marks the start of intensive preparation for the roster and coaching staff.
In a recent statement, Horne expressed excitement about the opportunity and highlighted the strong support he has received from school administrators, parents and the broader community.
He emphasized that building a cohesive squad across all levels will be key to achieving success on the field and fostering a sustainable football culture at Wewahitchka.
