Enrique Freeman’s Youth Basketball Camp Brings Mentorship to Akron

The former Akron Zips standout, supported by Jr. NBA and his own foundation, will host a fundraiser camp on July 25.

A Camp Built on Fundamentals and Community

The camp, scheduled for July 25 in Akron, Ohio, will welcome boys and girls between the ages of six and twelve. Organized in partnership with Jr. NBA, the event emphasizes core basketball skills while also serving as a fundraiser for the Freeman Family Foundation.

Two separate sessions will run that day — one for children aged six to nine and another for those aged ten to twelve. Each session is designed to teach fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, and defensive positioning, with an emphasis on teamwork and sportsmanship.

All proceeds from the camp will be directed to the Freeman Family Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing mentorship and opportunity for youth across the Akron‑Cleveland corridor. Freeman, who grew up in the area, says the initiative is a way to give back to the community that helped shape his career.

Freeman’s basketball résumé includes being named Mid‑American Conference Player of the Year for the 2023‑24 season and earning defensive player of the year honors in 2020‑21. After a stint with Minnesota last season in which he averaged 3.3 points and 2.5 rebounds, he recently signed a two‑way contract with the Timberwolves and is currently on the team’s summer league roster.

Beyond the court, Freeman hopes the camp will inspire the next generation to pursue both athletic and personal growth. “I want these kids to walk away with more than just better basketball skills,” he said. “I want them to know that someone believes in them and is willing to invest in their future.”
