A Season of Near Misses and Learning Curves
The Enterprise Hornets closed out 2025 with a 3-8 record, a result that reflected a combination of untimely injuries, a youthful roster and a handful of missed opportunities. A striking example came in the opening game against Corning, where the team built a 27-0 halftime lead before collapsing to a 42-40 loss that underscored the volatility of their campaign.
Coach Chris Combs has been candid about the root causes, pointing to injuries that sidelined two key skill players and linemen midway through the season. The setbacks forced younger players into unfamiliar roles and prevented the team from capitalizing on early dominance.
Nevertheless, the Hornets retain a core that should be markedly more experienced next year. Junior running back Koby Johnson, who amassed over 1,600 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore, returns as a proven workhorse. Senior quarterback Izaiah Mikell, who finished third in the Eastern Athletic League for passing yards last season, also comes back with valuable varsity experience.
Key Returners and Emerging Talent
Mikell’s primary target, Trason Fuller, is set to reprise his role as the top receiver, giving the quarterback a reliable option in the passing game. The team will also benefit from the resurgence of younger players who saw limited action on junior varsity, including linemen Brennan Villarruel and Cane Cervantes, who are expected to bolster the offensive line.
The coaching staff believes that continuity among the skill positions, combined with the added maturity of the returning roster, will translate into better execution on both sides of the ball. Early-season matchups, particularly the first five games, are viewed as critical barometers for league competitiveness.
A highlight on the schedule is the anticipated third straight victory over Shasta in the River Bowl rivalry, a game that could set the tone for the season. If the Hornets fail to capture a section championship in 2026, they plan to extend their campaign into December, giving the team additional opportunities to fine‑tune their strategy.
