Underdog Triumph
The EP U13B boys' hockey team returned home with a bronze medal after competing in a regional tournament held in Paarl, South Africa. Despite being one of the youngest squads in the competition, the players approached each match with a clear sense of purpose, turning expectations on their head.
Coach Aiden Elsworthy and his assistant Gerard Bennett had framed the tour as a chance for the youngsters to gain valuable experience, and the team embraced that mindset from the outset. Their underdog attitude was evident in the way they trained, communicated and supported one another on the field.
A highlight came in the semi‑final against the eventual champions, Western Province. The EP side managed to frustrate a side that many had written off as the tournament favourite, holding them to a narrow lead before a late goal sealed a hard‑fought defeat.
In the bronze‑medal match against Border Coastals the players displayed remarkable composure. After a tense opening period they regrouped, executed their game plan with discipline and secured a victory that underscored their resilience and teamwork.
The coaching staff praised the squad for their character, maturity and willingness to embrace every challenge. Their display of humility, accountability and sportsmanship resonated with opponents, coaches and spectators alike. The success would not have been possible without the backing of sponsors such as Tavcor Suzuki Port Elizabeth, as well as the unwavering support of parents, management and the wider community.
Looking ahead, the experience gained in Paarl is expected to shape the players' development pathways and inspire the next generation of hockey talent in the Eastern Province. The organisers have already begun acknowledging the role of institutions like Woodridge College and Prep, St Dominic’s Priory and Eastern Province Hockey in nurturing these young athletes.
