ESPN has rolled out its first Football Power Index for the 2026 college football season, a metric that blends simulation runs with a suite of performance indicators to forecast how teams will fare.
What the FPI measures
The index combines thousands of Monte Carlo simulations with historical win‑loss records, strength‑of‑schedule metrics and recruiting data to produce a single predictive score for each program.
At the top of the initial release, the Ohio State Buckeyes sit at No. 1, projected to finish the year with a 10.2‑2.4 record and a 9.2 % chance of completing the schedule undefeated.
The model also assigns the Buckeyes a 99.4 % probability of reaching six wins, a 38.8 % likelihood of capturing the Big Ten crown, and a 75.7 % chance of securing a College Football Playoff berth.
Chances for the playoff and the title
Further breakdowns give Ohio State a 28.2 % chance of making the national championship game and a 17.1 % chance of winning the national title, figures that place them ahead of every other contender in the early outlook.
The top ten also features Texas, Notre Dame, Oregon, Georgia, Indiana, Miami (FL), Alabama, LSU and Texas Tech, each carrying distinct statistical footprints that the index tracks.
A living model
ESPN has said the FPI will be updated throughout the season, allowing the projections to evolve as games are played and new data becomes available, ensuring that the rankings remain as dynamic as the sport itself.
