Essentia Health Equips Youth Soccer with Lifesaving AEDs and Training

AED placement and CPR education aim to boost survival rates in community sports

Essentia Health announced a new partnership with the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association, delivering an automated external defibrillator and hands‑on CPR and AED instruction to dozens of coaches and parents. The initiative underscores a growing focus on emergency preparedness within local sports facilities.

A Lifesaving Investment in Community Safety

The donated AED will be stationed at each of the association’s fields, ensuring that critical equipment is readily accessible during practices and games. Alongside the device, participants received practical training that can be applied instantly in the event of cardiac arrest.

Dr. Catherine Benziger, a cardiologist with Essentia Health, stressed that rapid response using CPR and an AED can dramatically improve survival odds. "Every minute counts when a heart attack occurs," she said, "and having these tools in public spaces like soccer fields saves lives."

Morgan Maclean, the association’s assistant director, knows the stakes firsthand. He survived a heart attack in December thanks to immediate CPR and AED intervention administered by a teammate. Now an advocate for widespread training, Maclean encourages anyone involved in youth sports to learn these lifesaving skills.

Beyond the immediate donation, the partnership includes updated AED units at every field and ongoing CPR classes available throughout the Duluth area. Organizers hope the model can be replicated by other community groups seeking to protect participants and spectators alike.
