Essex County is moving forward with a plan to christen a soccer field at Riverfront Park in Newark after Albert Coutinho, a figure who helped shape the city’s sporting landscape and Portuguese‑American community.
A Life Dedicated to the Beautiful Game
Coutinho co‑founded the Ironbound Soccer Club, a grassroots organization that introduced countless youngsters to the sport, and he later earned induction into the New Jersey Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2021.
Beyond the pitch, he championed Portuguese culture, organizing the annual Newark Portugal Day Festival that celebrates heritage through music, food and dance.
His public service included two stints in the New Jersey General Assembly, first from 1997 to 1998 and then from 2008 to 2013, where he pushed for school‑repair funding in Newark and advocated for criminal‑justice reform.
DiVincenzo, the county commissioner who announced the proposal, noted that the field recently received a new synthetic playing surface, a fitting tribute to a man whose influence still resonates on and off the grass.
Riverfront Park, which opened in 2012, has become a hub for community recreation, and the upcoming dedication will be reviewed by the Essex County Board of County Commissioners in the coming weeks.
