Long Beach State University has confirmed the addition of Ethan Chung to its men's basketball program for the 2026‑27 season, completing a recruiting class that also welcomes fellow freshman Max VanLaningham.
A Unique Talent
Chung, a 6‑6 guard who spent three seasons at Punahou High School in Honolulu, emerged as one of the state's most reliable scorers. In his senior year he averaged 14.9 points per game and sank 40 three‑pointers, reaching the 20‑point mark on four occasions and scoring in double figures in every game except two.
Coach's Perspective
Coach Acker highlighted Chung's distinctive background and his commitment to personal development, noting that the player's mindset aligns with the program's broader goals. 'Ethan brings more than just stats; he brings a mindset that will benefit his teammates on and off the court,' Acker said in a statement.
A Freshman Duo
Joining Chung will be Max VanLaningham, another incoming freshman who arrives with a reputation for versatility and defensive intensity. Together, the two newcomers are expected to inject fresh energy into a roster that aims to contend within the Big West Conference.
Looking Forward
The coaching staff believes that integrating players with diverse cultural experiences will enhance team chemistry and broaden the program's appeal. As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the addition of Chung and VanLaningham is seen as a strategic move to deepen depth and add a new competitive edge.
