A Comeback for the Ages
Evansville erupted from an early hole to secure a 6-3 win over Illinois State in Game 3 of the Missouri Valley Conference Baseball Championship, held at Johnny Reagan Field in Murray, Kentucky.
The Purple Aces fell behind early, but a clutch performance by senior pitcher Chris McCormack kept them in contention. McCormack delivered a complete game, allowing just six hits while striking out 11 batters, anchoring a pitching staff that refused to buckle.
Offensively, Charlie Longmeier was the catalyst, finishing 5-for-5 with a triple, a double, two runs scored and an RBI that swung the momentum. His timely hits sparked a rally that turned a 2-0 deficit into a lead by the fifth inning.
The supporting cast also shone. Michael Carrano Jr. contributed two doubles and an RBI for the Redbirds, while Graham Mastros added a hit, an RBI and a run scored. The combined effort erased the early sting and put Evansville on the board.
With the victory, Evansville improved to 21-32 and now prepares for another elimination showdown tonight at 9:15 p.m. CT. The team will look to ride the momentum of Longmeier’s hot bat and McCormack’s dominant arm as they chase a deeper run in the tournament.
Illinois State’s season concluded at 33-24, bringing a close to a campaign that had kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the year.
