A season of growth and achievement
The 2026 flag football campaign in Section 1 has seen unprecedented expansion, with 36 teams battling across Westchester, Rockland and Putnam. The surge reflects a growing appetite for the sport among high school athletes, setting the stage for memorable matchups and championship narratives.
Yorktown emerged as the Class B state champions, capping a dominant season that included a decisive victory in the title game. The triumph follows Scarsdale’s Class A crown in 2025, underscoring the competitive balance within the region.
Eve Girardi’s record‑breaking year
Senior Eve Girardi of Tappan Zee has been named the 2026 lohud Flag Football Player of the Year after delivering a spectacular statistical line: 2,832 passing yards, 55 touchdown passes, 1,125 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns. Her defensive contributions were equally striking, with 77 flag pulls, seven interceptions and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Girardi’s accolades extend beyond the field. She was also crowned Section 1 Class B Player of the Year and will continue her athletic career at Central Connecticut State, where she plans to play women’s soccer in the fall.
The recognition of Girardi joins a roster of standout performers, including Julianna DiMarino, Stephanie Douglas, Sarah Sherman, Sydney Soliz, Nina Vasquez, Hope Ziogas and Mike Rescigno, whose contributions helped shape a vibrant season for the valley’s high school sports community.
