Opening loss leaves Explorers seeking answers
La Salle University’s field hockey squad opened the 2026 campaign with a 7‑0 setback against Villanova, a result that underscored the steep learning curve early in the season.
Despite the lopsided score, the Explorers showed flashes of resilience, particularly between the posts where Abby Boggs turned away eight of twelve shots in the first three quarters, keeping the game within reach early on.
The team’s first penalty corner came in the opening quarter, generating two attempts on Maddi Sears’ net, while Tilly Diedrichsen and Marisol Torreyson each tested the Villanova defense with individual shots before halftime.
Erin Sicari added a late second‑quarter effort, but the Explorers could not find a breakthrough, finishing the half with just six total shots, two of which came from Torreyson and Darian DeLeo.
A tactical shift in the fourth quarter saw Boggs replaced by Zarah Synnestvedt, who logged an early save upon entering, while Natalie Wilson recorded the program’s first defensive stop of the season.
Coach Mackenzie Allessie will now guide the squad to upstate New York for a weekend series against Cornell and Colgate, hoping the experience gained in the opening loss translates into a first victory.
The upcoming matches also mark a geographic pivot, with the team traveling to Conshohocken, Pennsylvania, for practice before heading to New York, a move designed to acclimate players to the new environment and build momentum.
