A Record Set in Mourning
Matthew Bucciero, a senior at Fairfield University, has become one of the most prolific hitters in the program’s history, amassing 53 career home runs and setting six school records, while also leading the team in multiple offensive categories this season.
His achievements have helped the squad capture conference championships in each of his first three years, and his consistent performance continues to drive the team’s pursuit of another title.
The most poignant moment came when he broke the home‑run record on the same day his grandfather, Gaetano Bucciero, passed away, turning a personal tragedy into a tribute that honored his family’s legacy.
Family, Faith, and Future
Bucciero credits his close‑knit family, including his twin brother Daniel Bucciero, who was drafted by the Oakland A's and is now competing in Class A, as well as his parents Christine and Michael Bucciero, for the support that has shaped his career.
Coach Bill Currier and longtime mentor Charlie Pagliarini have also played pivotal roles, guiding him through the pressures of collegiate play and helping him maintain focus on team success rather than individual accolades.
Looking ahead, Bucciero hopes to lead Fairfield to another championship before stepping into the professional draft, a goal that reflects both his competitive fire and his desire to continue the Bucciero family’s baseball tradition.
The Bucciero twins share a unique bond on and off the field, pushing each other to reach new heights and embodying the competitive spirit that defines their upbringing in Connecticut.
Beyond the diamond, Matthew remains connected to his roots in Fairfield, often speaking about the importance of community, education, and the values instilled by his parents, Christine and Michael.
As the season progresses, the team’s chemistry and Bucciero’s leadership are seen as key factors in their pursuit of another conference title, a prospect that would cement his legacy at Fairfield University.
