Two decades of tradition
The Cardinal Football Camp at Fairmont High School is celebrating its 20th year, a milestone that head coach Mat Mahoney never imagined when he first took the reins. Open to students from fourth through twelfth grade, the camp takes place on the school's practice facility adjacent to Mahoney Field, offering a mix of fun and fundamental instruction.
Mahoney, alongside longtime assistants Brad Johnson and Terry Ehlert, has built a program defined by consistency. Their combined two‑decade presence has created a stable environment where coaching philosophies and player development strategies remain deeply rooted in the school's culture.
The camp also serves as a bridge between current and future players. Upperclassmen, including Jesse Walters — who began as a senior in Mahoney's inaugural year — now help mentor younger participants, fostering a sense of continuity that stretches across generations of families.
Heat, schedules, and the road ahead
The opening day was postponed due to extreme heat, prompting the staff to adjust the schedule. Mornings from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. are reserved for fourth through sixth graders, emphasizing enjoyment and basic skills, while evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. cater to seventh through twelfth graders, introducing them to varsity‑level concepts. An additional morning practice for the older group is slated for Thursday from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.
All eyes are now on Monday, August 17, when the first official practice of the high school fall season will commence. The camp's legacy of mentorship and community involvement continues to shape the program as it looks toward another season of growth and competition.
