An overgrown 22‑acre plot on the edge of East Austin has been transformed into a vibrant soccer park, thanks to a coalition of faith‑based groups and community partners.

Central Texas Interfaith, a network of more than twenty congregations and nonprofits, has long used listening sessions to surface neighborhood priorities. Its members saw the neglected Tillery field not just as vacant land but as a missed opportunity for health, recreation and social cohesion.
Ismael Guzman, a longtime advocate for youth sports, pushed the city to clear the site, clearing the way for the East Austin Soccer Club to claim the space for its teams.
The city allocated $300,000 for irrigation infrastructure, while community leaders raised an additional $200,000 to complete the project, turning a patch of weeds into a well‑maintained field.
The new Tillery East Austin Soccer Park now hosts local leagues, including the men’s soccer squad from Huston‑Tillotson University, giving student‑athletes a place to train and compete close to home.
Beyond the turf, the partnership illustrates how shared faith can translate into concrete action, echoing biblical teachings about collective effort and love for neighbor.
