A Busy August for Local Athletes
The summer heat is giving way to a packed schedule for teams across Wilson County. NCHSAA member schools will open fall practice on July 29, with flag football slated to begin a month later on August 31. Tackle football squads, both varsity and junior varsity, hit the fields on Wednesday, and the first games are set for August 20 for JV and August 21 for varsity competition. Other fall sports can already be playing as early as August 10, setting the stage for a busy month of matchups.
Lewis Neal Community Day Brings Youth Football and More
On August 1, Hunt High will host Lewis Neal Community Day, a free event that blends youth football instruction with food trucks, local vendors, and live music. The former NFL player, who grew up in the area, will lead a camp aimed at teaching fundamentals while giving families a chance to connect with local businesses and community groups.
Wilson Post 13 Advances in State Tournament
Wilson Post 13 is currently competing in the North Carolina American Legion Baseball state tournament in Gastonia. After dropping the opener, the team rallied to win an elimination game on Sunday, securing a rematch against Union County Post 535 on Monday. Should they advance again, they face back‑to‑back games on Tuesday, with potential evening contests depending on the outcome, and the championship or a decisive ‘if necessary’ game scheduled for Wednesday.
Warbirds Chase Walk‑off Records
The Wilson Warbirds are locked in a six‑game series against the Fredericksburg Nationals at Wilson Ballpark. The club boasts the league’s most walk‑off victories this season, with eleven such finishes already recorded. This homestand marks one of only two remaining home stretches for the Warbirds, adding extra significance to each contest as they push for a strong finish.
Little League Region Tournament of Champions
The Southeast Region Tournament of Champions for Ages 8‑10 is underway at the Gillette Baseball Complex. Wilson’s Little League All‑Stars, representing the state runner‑up, are scheduled to play three pool‑play games: a Saturday showdown with the Florida champion Niceville Valparaiso Little League, a Sunday matchup against the Virginia champion Vienna American, and a final pool game on Monday morning against South Carolina’s champion, Northwood.
