Jeffrey Vinik, former owner of the Tampa Bay Lightning, saw his then‑wife Penny Vinik immortalised in the 2021 edition, while Vincent Viola of the Florida Panthers ensured his wife Teresa and three children — John, Michael and Travis — were etched after back‑to‑back championships in 2024 and 2025.
The phenomenon stretches back decades. The 1984 Edmonton Oilers famously listed Peter Pocklington’s father, Basil Pocklington, on the trophy, only to have the name removed later amid controversy. More recently, Brad Aldrich, a video coach for the Chicago Blackhawks, found his name covered after a 2021 allegation, illustrating how quickly the Cup can reflect both triumph and scandal.
Eligibility rules allow teams to petition for exemptions, a mechanism that let Nicolas Deslauriers, a goaltender who appeared in 38 regular‑season games for Carolina, secure his place on the metal despite not being among the 53 names initially added.
While the Hockey Hall of Fame does not oversee the engraving process, it safeguards the Cup’s legacy, ensuring that each addition — whether a player, a family member or a contentious figure — is preserved with care.
The trend underscores a broader shift in professional sports, where ownership identities intertwine with team histories, blurring the line between institutional achievement and personal narrative.
