A Throwback with Purpose
Florida A&M’s football program is taking an unconventional step as head coach Quinn Gray moves the entire squad into the historic Sampson Hall dormitory for the start of preseason camp.
The approach, reminiscent of a tradition Gray experienced as a player under his mentor Billy Joe, is designed to accelerate chemistry and force teammates to rely on one another in high‑pressure scenarios.
The Rattlers reported to camp on July 29, began on‑field work on July 31, and will remain in the dormitory for roughly a week and a half, staying there until just before the fall semester begins for the broader student body on August 24.
Their stay will conclude on August 22, the final day of camp, just days before the season opener against Albany State on August 29, a game that will be broadcast on SWAC TV, ESPNU, HBCU GO and the ACC Network.
Gray says the immersive environment is about more than just lodging; it’s about shaping a collective identity that can translate into better performance on the field.
By blending old‑school dorm life with modern training methods, the Rattlers hope to emerge from camp not only physically prepared but also mentally united, a strategy that could set a new benchmark for team building in college football.
