Fatal Crash on Highway 2 Claims Life of Former Denfeld Star

Investigation continues after driver released without immediate charges

A Life Cut Short on a Quiet Stretch of Highway

A 2021 graduate of Denfeld High School, Keyshawn Michael Beckom, was killed early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was riding in was struck by a Jeep that left the roadway and collided with a power pole on U.S. Highway 2 in Culver Township.

The crash occurred just west of Brookston around 3:45 a.m., after the Jeep Grand Cherokee drifted into the oncoming lane, gradually moving into the ditch before striking the pole. Emergency responders arrived to find the passenger, Beckom, already deceased.

A Young Athlete Remembered

Friends, teammates and community members have taken to social media to mourn Beckom, whose athletic achievements earned him first‑team all‑district and all‑conference honors in his senior year. The Denfeld football program and the Valley Youth Center have shared tributes highlighting his impact on and off the field.

Beckom continued his football career at Mesabi Range College in Virginia, where he was pursuing both academics and athletics. His death has sparked renewed conversations about road safety and the handling of repeat offenders within the local justice system.

Legal Questions Surround a Release

The driver of the Jeep, who has a documented history of traffic violations, was treated at Aspirus St. Luke’s Hospital and subsequently booked on preliminary charges of vehicular homicide and impaired driving. Investigators have obtained a search warrant for his blood, collecting two samples within 90 minutes of the crash response.

According to court records, the driver has faced at least five prior convictions related to driving without a valid license or after revocation, and he previously pleaded guilty to impaired driving and unlawful possession of a firearm following a May 2024 traffic stop.
