A Milestone Journey
Under the guidance of head coach Jason Turkington, the Father McGivney High School girls soccer team has etched its name into Illinois sports history by securing the first-ever state tournament berth for the program.
The team’s season has been nothing short of an offensive onslaught, outscoring every opponent 128‑13 across 27 contests, a margin that reflects both depth and precision.
Leading the attack, Natalie Beck has piled up 36 goals and 26 assists, while Layla Tobin adds 22 goals and 17 assists, and Sophia Rossetto contributes 16 goals with 14 assists; Emerson Isringhausen rounds out the scoring with 11 goals and 10 assists.
In goal, Peyton Ellis has been a wall, posting a 0.48 goals‑against average and making 105 saves in 27 appearances, a performance that has kept the team’s defense tight.
The upcoming semifinal will pit the Flyers against Timothy Christian, a program that has allowed just 14 goals in 20 matches this year, setting the stage for a clash of contrasting styles.
The championship match is slated for Saturday at 2:30 p.m., a date that has the entire Bethalto community buzzing with anticipation as families, alumni and local businesses rally behind the team.
Team captain Erin Kretzer and senior midfielder Harper Dettmers have been vocal leaders in the locker room, while teammates Macie Begley, Jayde Speight, Mackenzie Laslo, Mia Schifl, Kylee Zielke and Claire Wade have all contributed to the squad’s chemistry.
Assistant coaches Matt McVicar and Dave Wykoff have been instrumental in shaping the team’s tactical discipline, ensuring that the Flyers enter the semifinal with both confidence and strategy.
