A Community on the Ice
On a crisp Saturday morning in early October, the halls of the Morley Community Center buzzed with the clatter of crates and the chatter of volunteers preparing to distribute essential groceries.
The effort was led by the Ferris State University hockey program, where coaches Brett Riley and Zack Cisek coordinated the distribution alongside a roster of student‑athletes, among them Holden Doell from Martensville, Saskatchewan, and Chris Lie of Hamar, Norway.
Joining them was Ben Mumah, a 1972 alumnus of Morley‑Stanwood High School, whose decades‑long involvement has turned the drive into a seasonal tradition. Together they packed fresh produce, beans and milk, preparing parcels for families facing food insecurity.
‘It’s more than a game for us,’ Doell said, reflecting on the personal connection he feels to the town he now calls home. ‘Giving back feels like scoring a goal for the community.’
The initiative, organized in partnership with Feeding America West Michigan, not only supplies essential groceries but also strengthens bonds between the team and the region, reinforcing a culture of service that extends beyond the rink.
