Road Trip Opener Turns Sour
Florida Gulf Coast University’s men’s soccer squad fell 3‑2 to Charleston in the second contest of a five‑match road swing, a result that underscores the challenges of playing away from home.
The game opened with a swift strike as Charleston capitalized on a defensive misstep, allowing Matt Lennart to open the scoring in the third minute, the assist coming from Michiharu Takanashi.
FGCU answered quickly, with junior forward Brooks Beeman leveling the contest in the 30th minute, his powerful strike from outside the box catching the goalkeeper off guard.
Just three minutes later the Eagles were back in front as Lennart rose to meet a cross from Hogan Walker, heading the ball past the outstretched hands of Marcelo Lacayo.
Emerson LaOrden, a sophomore midfielder, then etched his name onto the scoresheet with his first collegiate goal, a well‑timed finish that restored parity at 2‑2.
Lacayo’s reflexes kept FGCU in the game, notably a sharp save in the 47th minute against Ryan Watson’s attempt, preserving the tie as the teams headed into the break.
The momentum shifted again when freshman defender Christian Nobo was shown a red card in the 72nd minute for denying a clear scoring chance, leaving the Eagles a man short for the final stretch.
A Late Winner and a Red Card
Charleston’s Lennart completed his influence on the match by heading home the decisive goal in the 86th minute, the ball looping in off a cross that left the FGCU defense scrambling.
Despite outshot Charleston 10‑7 and generating six shots on target, the Eagles could only manage two goals, a testament to the tight defending and a few missed chances.
The team now turns its attention to a showdown with Liberty on August 28, the next stop on a demanding itinerary that will test both depth and resilience.
