A Global Celebration of Basketball's Impact
The FIBA Foundation was invited to the United Nations Headquarters in July to take part in the One World, One Game, One Goal celebration, a global gathering that spotlights sport’s role in youth development, mental health and community well‑being.
Together with World YMCA and the YMCA of the Greater New York, the foundation led a series of Spotlight Sessions that examined how Basketball For Good programmes create inclusive spaces where young people can belong, gain confidence and develop leadership skills.
The session titled *How Basketball Builds Belonging, Well‑Being and Hope* was co‑led by Theren Bullock Jr., Head of the FIBA Foundation, youth leader Layana de Souza, YMCA youth representative Averi Brown and Ibrahim Diakite, Senior Manager for Youth and Family at the YMCA of the Greater New York.
De Souza recounted how the sport became a refuge for her, offering a sense of belonging, hope and confidence that she describes as a second home for many participants.
Diakite added that these programmes do more than provide developmental opportunities; they establish a supportive environment that feels like home for the youngsters who join them.
Basketball as a Second Home for Youth
The testimonies from de Souza and Diakite illustrate a broader trend: basketball is increasingly viewed not just as a game but as a community hub that nurtures mental health and personal growth among adolescents worldwide.
