A week‑long Basketball For Good Facilitators Workshop is set to take place in Suva, Fiji, bringing together a cohort of community leaders eager to harness the power of sport for social change.
A Joint Effort for Sustainable Impact
The initiative is a collaboration between FIBA in Oceania, the FIBA Foundation and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, aiming to train 21 leaders from 12 National Federations in delivering inclusive basketball programs that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially Health & Well‑Being and Gender Equality.
Participants will engage in a blended learning model that combines online modules with an intensive in‑person session, covering facilitation techniques, safeguarding protocols, officiating standards and the Basketball For Good Playbook.
Hands‑On Experience on the Ground
During the workshop, the trainees will apply their new skills at the Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship and a Basketball For Good Jamboree, events designed to foster youth engagement and showcase the transformative potential of the sport.
Insights from the Field
FIBA Executive Director – Oceania Amanda Jenkins highlighted the workshop’s role in supporting National Federations and creating pathways for young people across the region, emphasizing that sustainable capacity‑building is essential for lasting community impact.
The partnership with MFAT seeks to leverage international cooperation to amplify local outcomes, using sport as a catalyst for healthier lifestyles and leadership development in underserved communities.
The program will culminate with a Jamboree 3×3 tournament and the finals of the Fiji Secondary Schools Basketball Championship on August 29, marking a tangible celebration of the participants’ progress and the shared vision of a more equitable sporting landscape.
