The Fin‑Classic Special Ice Hockey Tournament descended on Sharks Ice in San Jose over Memorial Day Weekend, drawing nearly 100 players from across the United States for a three‑day celebration of inclusion and community.
A Community‑Driven Celebration
Hosted by the nonprofit One Step Beyond, Inc., the event offered skill development sessions, friendly games and a series of social activities that welcomed athletes of all abilities.
Funding for the tournament came from the Sharks Foundation’s Goals for Kids program, which contributed $25,250 and has donated more than $2.8 million to youth‑focused nonprofits since its inception.
Jared Woosley, Director of Special Programs at One Step Beyond, Inc., emphasized the tournament’s emphasis on accessibility, noting that hockey is for everyone regardless of age, gender or skill level.
Beyond the Rink
The weekend kicked off with on‑ice drills and a welcome reception at Roosevelt Rink, where S.J. Sharkie made an appearance and guests enjoyed pizza and ball hockey. Sunday’s final games culminated in a medal ceremony, honoring each athlete’s accomplishments, while a catered dinner and dance party at Calder’s wrapped up the festivities.
The impact of the Fin‑Classic extended far beyond the ice, reminding participants that hockey is for everyone and reinforcing the Sharks Foundation’s commitment to removing barriers for players of all backgrounds.
