A LoboAlert was issued early Thursday morning after a disturbing scene unfolded on the basketball courts near Redondo Court and Redondo East on the University of New Mexico campus. The alert warned students and staff that a potentially dangerous situation was developing in a location that is normally used for recreational play.
Witnesses reported that a male individual, described as Hispanic, approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall with a slim build and believed to be between 20 and 25 years old, removed a handgun from a bag and pointed it at three people nearby. The weapon was brandished briefly before the suspect turned and fled.
Investigation Underway
Campus police and Albuquerque police officers responded quickly, securing the area and launching a search for the suspect. Authorities have confirmed that the incident occurred during an unsanctioned pickup game and that no injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing, and detectives are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.
The suspect was last seen walking south on Cornell Mall and exiting the campus onto Central Avenue. Officials have emphasized that the alert was precautionary, aiming to keep the university community informed while law‑enforcement officials work to resolve the situation.
