Firecracker Classic Road Race Returns to Cotuit with Community Spirit and Sweet Prizes

A 25‑year‑old 5K tradition draws hundreds, supports local causes, and kicks off Fourth of July festivities

A Summer Tradition Revived

The Firecracker Classic Road Race has become a summer staple in the tiny coastal village of Cotuit, Massachusetts, drawing families, runners, and curious onlookers for nearly a quarter‑century.

Organized by SEMC Sports, the event kicks off at 6:15 p.m. with a 5K that winds from Lowell Park through the scenic waterfront, past Ropes Beach and Loop Beach, before looping back to the finish line.

Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome, whether they choose to jog, walk, or dash, and the atmosphere is punctuated by a long‑standing costume tradition — last year a bumblebee and a caped cod stole the show.

After the race, participants gather for a lively after‑party that features pizza, beer, and treats from local vendors such as the Centerville Pie Company, which awards oversized cherry pies to the overall male and female winners and smaller pies to age‑group champions.

Kids’ activities begin at 6 p.m., offering games and crafts, while the admission fee stands at $44.35 for the race and $12.55 for the children’s program, proceeds from which support a quartet of local nonprofits.

Beneficiaries include the Barnstable Land Trust, Cotuit Athletic Association, Cape Cod Challenger Club, and Boy Scout Troop 52, each of which receives a share of the funds raised.

Since 2021, attendance has more than doubled, climbing from 225 participants to roughly 500 this year, underscoring the race’s growing role as a community gathering and a launchpad for Fourth of July celebrations.

A Sweet Spot for Community

The blend of sport, charity, and playful rivalry makes the Firecracker Classic more than a race; it’s a celebration of local identity, with the scent of fresh pies and the buzz of costumes reminding residents why they keep coming back.
