Spotlight on the 2026 Standout Boys Soccer Players
The 2026 high school boys soccer season is already generating buzz across the Daily Journal region, where five standout athletes are emerging as the players to watch.
Angel Cruz of Kankakee spearheaded his squad to its first Southland Athletic Conference championship, posting an immaculate 8‑0 conference slate. His 22 goals and 11 assists earned him All‑Southland and All‑Sectional honors, underscoring his impact on both ends of the pitch.
Carter Nicholson, anchored the Coal City defense, which conceded only 14 goals over 28 matches. Between the posts, he logged 198 saves, a performance that secured All‑Illinois Central Eight and All‑Sectional recognitions.
Jack Watters, a sophomore center back at Bradley‑Bourbonnais, started every game and helped the Boilermakers record eight shutouts en route to a 13‑11 season, their most successful campaign since 2018.
Rowan Keigher from Herscher combined scoring and playmaking, netting 23 goals and dishing out 17 assists as a junior. His contributions kept the team on a winning trajectory, marking the program’s 19th winning season in the past 20 years.
Dylan Polito of Manteno served as a defensive anchor, contributing to 13 shutouts, including dramatic victories over Coal City that stretched into marathon contests. His All‑ICE and All‑Sectional selections reflect a rising defensive pedigree.
