Harding University announced that five of its baseball players have been selected for the 2026 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team, a distinction that honors student-athletes who excel both in the classroom and on the diamond.
A Season of Scholarship and Success
The selection criteria require participants to be at least sophomores, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and meet defined playing-time thresholds, ensuring that honorees represent a blend of athletic contribution and academic rigor.
Among the honorees, Merritt Jay of Arlington, Texas, stands out with a perfect 4.00 GPA as he pursues a graduate degree in management and business ethics. Jay logged 76 innings this season, posting a 5-3 record and striking out 72 batters.
Cooper Newsom, hailing from Smyrna, Tennessee, carries a 3.95 GPA in management and led the team with 65 runs batted in. He batted .320, hit nine home runs, and added 17 doubles, underscoring his offensive impact.
Phoenix West from Fort Collins, Colorado, maintains a 3.62 GPA in graphic design and posted a .297 average with seven home runs and 27 RBIs. Jack Opoien, a behavioral health major from Prosper, Texas, holds a 3.50 GPA and compiled a .301 batting average with 53 hits.
Logan Lacey, also from North Richland Hills, Texas, earned a 3.50 GPA in accounting and recorded a .301 average with 58 hits and 15 stolen bases. Their collective achievements reflect Harding’s commitment to developing well-rounded leaders.
