Five members of the University of Illinois baseball team have been recognized by College Sports Communicators with Academic All‑District honors, a testament to their commitment both in the classroom and on the diamond.
The CSC Academic All‑District program celebrates student‑athletes who have reached sophomore standing, maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50, and met minimum playing‑time requirements, highlighting a blend of scholarly and athletic excellence.
A closer look at the honorees
Reed Gannon, a two‑time honoree, appeared in 21 games this season, logging 37.2 innings with a 5‑2 record, 29 strikeouts and a 4.30 ERA. Off the mound, Gannon completed a bachelor's degree in finance with an agribusiness specialization, a graduate certificate in strategic leadership and management, and a master's degree in management.
Sam Reed also earned the distinction twice. He posted a 3.10 ERA, a 2‑1 record and 18 strikeouts across 18 appearances, and earned a degree in recreation, sport and tourism.
Nick Groves, another repeat selection, played in 54 games and posted a .312 batting average with a .446 on‑base percentage, the second‑best in program history. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in agricultural and consumer economics.
Will Johannes, making his first appearance on the All‑District list, started 38 of 42 games and finished with 10 home runs and 42 RBIs. He, too, earned a bachelor's degree in agricultural and consumer economics.
Kyle Schupmann rounded out the group by starting all 55 games at third base, hitting .282 with 58 hits, 52 runs, four homers, 24 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. He completed a bachelor's degree in agricultural and consumer economics.
