Five members of the Tufts University baseball program have been selected for the 2025‑26 College Sports Communicators Academic All‑District® Team, a distinction that highlights their combined excellence in the classroom and on the diamond.
The honorees — Cole Donato, Owen McKiernan, Malcolm Whitfield, Mark Herlihy and Mitchell Hwang — were recognized for maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 while playing pivotal roles on a squad that finished the season with 31 victories.
Team Triumphs on the Field
Head coach Bryan Stark praised the group, noting that each student‑athlete contributed significantly to a team that captured the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship and earned the right to host an NCAA Regional at Sol Gittleman Park.
All five players graduated on May 17, 2026, with Donato, McKiernan and Whitfield completing their Tufts careers, while Herlihy pursued an economics major and Hwang studied biology.
Looking Ahead to National Recognition
The Academic All‑District® program, which spans four divisions, honors student‑athletes who meet stringent participation thresholds — 90 percent of games played or 66 percent of starts for position players, and either 17 appearances or 35 innings pitched for pitchers.
Those who advance from the district level will appear on the CSC Academic All‑America® ballot, with first, second and third‑team honorees slated for announcement on June 23, 2026.
The recognition underscores a broader trend at Tufts, where athletic competitiveness and academic rigor are pursued in tandem, reflecting the university’s commitment to developing well‑rounded leaders.
