The National Association of Basketball Coaches recently announced that five members of the UC San Diego men's basketball roster have earned spots on its Honors Court, a distinction reserved for student‑athletes who achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2.
Academic Excellence on the Court
Among those honored are seniors Aidan Burke, graduate student Leo Beath, forward Tom Beattie, international student Bol Dengdit, and sophomore Yaqub Mir, each of whom balanced a rigorous academic schedule with a competitive season.
UC San Diego’s basketball program also received the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award, acknowledging that the entire squad posted a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher during the most recent term.
The association’s academic initiatives extend beyond individual recognition; in the 2025‑26 cycle more than 2,300 players across all divisions were named to the Honors Court, while roughly 400 programs garnered team awards, underscoring a league‑wide commitment to scholarly achievement.
Executive Director Craig Robinson has repeatedly emphasized that celebrating academic performance is as vital as tallying wins, noting that the accolades reflect the broader mission of integrating athletics with education.
A Legacy of Excellence
UC San Diego’s athletic department has leveraged its recent move to NCAA Division I to amplify this message, highlighting a legacy that includes 30 team championships and nearly 150 individual national titles, as well as 84 Academic All‑America honorees and 39 NCAA Post‑Graduate Scholarships.
The university boasts a 90 percent graduation rate among its scholar‑athletes, the highest among public institutions competing at the Division I or II level, a statistic that administrators say illustrates the effectiveness of support structures designed for student‑athletes.
