Flag Football Takes Root in Shanghai
A joint pilot programme by United Way Worldwide and the National Football League has started in Shanghai, bringing flag football to ten local schools. The initiative is designed to improve the physical and mental health of children through a safe, inclusive sport.
The programme places particular emphasis on migrant children, offering them a structured activity that builds confidence, connection and a sense of belonging within their new communities.
An Ambassador’s Mission
Australian national team player Kodie Fuller, one of eight Global Flag Football Ambassadors appointed by the NFL, travelled to Shanghai to introduce the sport and share his personal experience with the students.
During his visit, Fuller demonstrated basic skills, answered questions and encouraged the children to view flag football as a fun and accessible way to stay active.
Looking Toward 2028
The effort builds on a May 2026 training session in which NFL coaches taught twenty teachers the rules and techniques of flag football, preparing them for the rollout. Organisers hope the sport’s upcoming debut as an Olympic medal event in Los Angeles in 2028 will accelerate its adoption across China, with plans to expand to nearly 250 schools nationwide.
