Florida A&M’s men’s basketball team is set to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Toyota Chris Paul HBCU Classic, a two‑day showcase that will run from December 4 through December 5. The event brings together five programs, including Hampton, Tennessee State, Grambling State and Howard, and features a Division II bracket that will be played at CareFirst Arena.
Coach Charlie Ward, the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner who transitioned from a celebrated college football career to a brief NBA stint and then to coaching, will lead the Rattlers in the tournament. Ward’s appointment marked a new era for FAMU basketball, and his experience as a former collegiate and professional athlete adds a unique perspective to the team’s preparation.
A Platform for HBCU Excellence
The Chris Paul HBCU Classic was created by NBA legend Chris Paul to spotlight talent from Historically Black Colleges and Universities and to provide a national stage for programs that often receive limited exposure. Paul, who completed a degree at Winston‑Salem State and has been a vocal advocate for HBCUs, sees the tournament as a continuation of his commitment to these institutions.
Paul’s own basketball pedigree is extensive: he spent 21 seasons in the NBA, earned 12 All‑Star selections, amassed 11 All‑NBA Team honors, and led the league in assists five times and steals six times. His involvement lends credibility and visibility to the event, reinforcing its role as a developmental pipeline for future professional talent.
FAMU’s recent performance in the Southwestern Athletic Conference adds context to its participation. The Rattlers posted a 14‑17 record in Ward’s first season and came close to capturing the SWAC Championship, falling only in the semifinals to Southern University. The upcoming games represent an opportunity to build on that momentum.
Beyond the HBCU Classic, FAMU’s schedule includes an Orion180 Tip‑Off Classic matchup against Florida State on November 2 and a highly anticipated contest against the Florida Gators on December 21.
