Florida Gators Blast Florida Atlantic 66-21 in Season Opener

Coach Jon Sumrall’s debut features a prolific offense and early defensive wobbles

The Florida Gators opened their 2025 season in spectacular fashion, routing Florida Atlantic 66-21 in front of a packed 90,295 fans at The Swamp, setting a high-scoring record for a season opener.

Florida’s offense exploded early, building a 38-14 halftime lead after capitalizing on two turnovers and scoring on five of their first six possessions, which included five touchdowns and a field goal.

Quarterback Aaron Philo threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing score, and running back Jadan Baugh, the preseason All‑American, contributed 160 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, underscoring the depth of the Gators’ attack.

Despite the offensive fireworks, the defense showed cracks, surrendering ample yardage to the fast‑paced Owls and forcing only three takeaways, including interceptions by DJ Coleman and Dijon Johnson and a fumble recovery by Myles Johnson.

Special teams also made an impact, with Tulane transfer Patrick Durkin booting a 53‑yard field goal in his debut and backup kicker Liam Padron converting the decisive extra point.

Head coach Jon Sumrall, hired from Tulane in November 2025, emphasized the need to rebuild physical and mental toughness after four losing seasons in the past five years, a challenge now illuminated by the opening performance.

The 66 points marked the highest total by a Gators team in a season opener since a 70-21 win over New Mexico State in 1994, highlighting the program’s potential for a turnaround.
