The Florida Gators opened their season in spectacular fashion, routing Florida Atlantic 66-21, the highest-scoring game for the program in three decades.
A Record-Breaking Start
Under head coach Jon Sumrall, the offense exploded, with quarterback Aaron Philo making a memorable debut, throwing for 275 yards and three touchdowns while also picking off an interception.
Tailback Jadan Baugh added a rushing dimension, piling up 160 yards and three scores, including a pair of short runs that extended the Gators' lead early in the second quarter.
The ground game powered an average of 9.3 yards per play across 67 snaps, and the team managed eight touchdowns while drawing only three penalties, underscoring a disciplined and efficient attack.
Defensively, the Gators were porous, surrendering 396 yards on 90 plays and forcing just three turnovers, a performance that coach Sumrall described as "atrocious at times."
Despite the defensive lapses, Sumrall praised the squad's preparation and emotional intensity, noting that the victory set an encouraging tone for his first year in charge.
Supporting the star duo, receivers Vernell Brown III and Bailey Stockton combined for 117 and 47 yards respectively, while Dallas Wilson and TJ Abrams contributed key catches that kept the chains moving.
The halftime scoreline stood at 38-14 after Baugh’s 12‑yard and 7‑yard rushes, a testament to the Gators’ ability to strike quickly and maintain momentum.
This opening win also marks Sumrall’s return to the helm after a four‑year stretch that featured multiple conference championship appearances and three titles, adding weight to his early optimism.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with fans leaving smiling and the crowd’s excitement underscoring the significance of a dominant debut.
