Florida Gators coach Jon Sumrall has announced that wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. will be held out of the September 12 contest against Campbell, leaving the team’s receiving corps thin as it heads into a crucial early‑season matchup.
Injury concerns mount for the Gators
Singleton, a transfer from Auburn, was expected to be a cornerstone of the offense under Sumrall and coordinator Buster Faulkner, having posted 58 receptions for 534 yards and three touchdowns last season and adding five catches for 83 yards and a score in the spring game.
The injury stemmed from a block that opened a lane for Vernell Brown III’s 49‑yard touchdown run in the 66‑21 win over Florida Atlantic, resulting in an ankle problem that has been labeled ‘highly questionable’ for the Campbell game.
Sumrall and Faulkner have stressed the importance of Singleton’s size and route‑running, noting that his absence forces the Gators to rely on younger players and reshuffle the depth chart ahead of the Campbell showdown.
Defensive lineman Emmanuel Oyebadejo is also dealing with an ankle issue that has limited his practice participation, while offensive lineman Eagan Boyer is set to return to the practice field on September 8 after missing the FAU game.
Freshman wide receiver Davian Groce, who missed the FAU contest, may remain sidelined for another week, further thinning the depth chart as the Gators prepare for the early‑season test.
With multiple starters nursing injuries, the coaching staff is expected to adjust rotations and give more snaps to emerging talent, a scenario that could shape the early narrative of the Campbell game.
