The Florida Gators football team kicked off the 2025 season with a commanding 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic, establishing an early lead in the national conversation.
That performance marked the highest point total by a Gators squad in a season opener since 1994, when they defeated New Mexico State 70-21, and it extended the program’s all‑time opener win record to 90-30, including a 72-8 advantage at home in The Swamp.
Coach Jon Sumrall emphasized that the team’s success stemmed from meticulous preparation, a focused mindset, and emotional readiness, noting that “the work we put in during the offseason paid off on the field.”
Looking ahead, the Gators are set to host FCS opponent Campbell on September 12 at The Swamp, a matchup that offers a chance to begin the year 2-0 for the first time since 2021.
The victory also propelled Florida into the LBM Coaches Poll Top 25 at No. 25, sharing the spot with Virginia, and positioned the Gators among nine SEC programs ranked in the top tier, a conference that went a perfect 16-0 last week.
A Dominant Opening
The strong opening not only boosts the Gators’ confidence but also signals to rivals that the team is poised for a competitive season in the SEC.
